thanks mr. rosen!
POP-ROCK | New pop/rock band Honor Society surprised a lot of people when it opened for the Jonas Brothers’ world tour this summer – offering up decent hooks and great musicianship, sort of a look at the next step the brothers might take musically.
The band continued to surprise with its concurrent Full Moon Crazy tour in clubs in the same cities the Jonases played, showing it could carry a whole show by itself.
Now Honor Society offers up another surprise with its debut CD, “Fashionably Late,” out today.
The disc’s 12 songs capture the same arena pop the band played at the Jonas shows – in fact, the songs “Full Moon Crazy,” “Don’t Close the Book” and the first single “See U In The Dark” were played at those shows.
The band’s sound falls somewhere between 1980s new wave and popular radio pop/rock, incorporating synths with guitars and drums. But it often shines more on the slower songs, which let its musical savvy show through.
The disc’s centerpiece and the best song is “Goodnight My Love,” a guitar-and-strings goodbye song and showcase for singer Michael Bruno’s higher range. And while the lyrics are no Dylan poems, they’re decent. “My Own Way” and “Don’t Close The Book,” two other slower but still hooky songs, also are winners.
But the harder hooks also work: “Sing 4 U” -- with synths and handclaps -- and, especially, the new single, disc opener “Over You,” with rapid-fire lyrics and a good, big beat.
Not every song succeeds. With the disc executive-produced by the Jonas Brothers, there’s a tendency as they did on the recent albums to over-produce. That’s true on the decent “Why Didn’t I” and especially the disc-closing “Rock With You,” a funky synth song that is close to the Michael Jackson tune of the same name. There’s also an over use of bullhorn-distorted lyrics.
But those are minor complaints. With “Fashionably Late,” Honor Society goes immediately to the head of the class

Now riding high with the September 15 release of their full-length album, Fashionably Late, Honor Society is quickly becoming one of the hottest bands of the year. After a busy summer that saw the Honor Society guys on tour with The Jonas Brothers and Jordin Sparks, Honor Society is taking to the road to headline their own tour in support of Fashionably Late, which kicks off on September 15, the same date as the album’s release. Known for having a penchant for fan interactivity, Honor Society has been named one of the "6 Bands to Watch" in 2009 by Rolling Stone, and for good reason.
Hailing from the east coast confines of New Jersey and New York, Honor Society combines the talents of Michael Bruno (lead vocals, guitar), Jason Rosen (guitar, keyboard, vocals), Andrew Lee (vocals, bass), and Alexander Noyes (drums) who released two EPs prior to their full-length debut and most recently contributed a song for the Vanessa Hudgens toplined movie, Bandslam. Fashionably Late is the culmination of years of hard work filled with catchy melodies and honest lyrics which reflect a relatable sincerity young fans will surely connect with as they find Honor Society.
With Fashionably Late dropping everywhere as of September 15, we got a chance to chat with Honor Society drummer, Alexander Noyes, to learn more about the band, their sound, songwriting, what it means for them to be Fashionably Late, and what they took away from working with the Jonas Brothers.
THE DEADBOLT: First of all, congratulations on the album.
ALEXANDER NOYES: Thank you so much. We actually got the physical copies last night and got to deal with all the crazy stickers and the plastic that comes with them. We got to put it in our own CD players. It was honestly, like, we were little kids.
THE DEADBOLT: So how does it feel after a two year process?
NOYES: It is incredibly rewarding. When you are coming up on a first album, I feel like you really have a lifetime to draw upon. You’ve literally prepared your life to put out your first album. It was just an incredible experience. We got to do the album with John Fields who produced the album and the Jonas Brothers who co-wrote a couple of the songs, and they also co-produced a couple of the tracks. So to actually get the opportunity to do a first record and to do it with those people is good.
THE DEADBOLT: I know you guys have worked really hard to get to this point after releasing a couple of EPs. Now you’re getting ready to go on two tours?
NOYES: Yes, Tuesday September 15.
THE DEADBOLT: How do you think thee simultaneous tours are going to affect your mindset when it comes to promoting your album?
NOYES: The two tours were so much fun to be able to do both this summer. The Jonas Brothers was one. We got to go out in front of huge, huge crowds night after night and really try to live up to the show that The Jonas Brothers and Jordin Sparks are doing. It is world class entertainment, to be there and take it all in and to see their show and try and fly, little things that you picked up from your own shows. On top of that to be able to do after-hours shows, to play to a slightly older audience at clubs was really, really cool. It was sort of a return to our roots and where we started. The juxtaposition of the two shows was, obviously drastic but made for a really cool summer.
THE DEADBOLT: You've toured with The Jonas Brothers before. You were their drummer?
NOYES: Yes, for about a year.
THE DEADBOLT: What kinds of tips did you pick up from them?
NOYES: The one thing The Jonas Brothers really live by, and now that they are really superstars and have recognition worldwide, within the camp with the other artists, the whole camp has this one motto - "Live like you’re at the bottom even if you’re at the top." I think that just embodies their personalities and just how they approach everyday, because even with an upcoming band you can see how it is really easy for someone to become big-headed and start to believe the hype. You really have to be thankful for every opportunity, be thankful for everyday, and make the most of it.
THE DEADBOLT: You guys use Twitter a lot with your fans to update everyone on where you'll be doing shows, How does that connection, also with artists like Jordan Sparks, influence the music for a second album?
NOYES: For most of the tour we actually shared a dressing room with her band and we got very, very close. Honestly, she has just been such an incredible supporter and become a really good friend. When we were doing the Full Moon Crazy tour, more often than not, she would come out and watch the shows and hang out backstage, always just shouting us out. She is one of our biggest cheerleaders and it is so awesome because she doesn’t need to be. So it’s an honor and we like to return the favor as much as we can. She is one of the most talented performers that we have ever worked with and is such an incredible person.
THE DEADBOLT: She has a pretty big fan base herself coming off of American Idol. Having someone like that support you must be beneficial for you as well. I assume you have a lot of crossover fans?
NOYES: Sure. I mean, she won American Idol and putting out a first album that had hit after hit on it. "No Air" and the list goes on and on. Even on her new album we actually all went out and got it when it came out. That album from top to drop is equally as impressive.
THE DEADBOLT: Going into your live shows, one of the critiques could be that Honor Society has been categorized as a boy band. How do you feel those types of labels affect bands trying to cross genres?
NOYES: Well, I mean, I understand where that label comes from. If you listen to the music, it is a pop record. Mike has incredible vocals, his vocals are incredibly fluid, so I can understand how anyone could get that impression. But I think it is really important to come out to the live shows because, the fact of the matter is, we are not out there singing and dancing. That is not our deal. We appreciate that. We appreciate that music. But the fact of the matter is that we all went to vocal music and we all play our own instruments, we write our own songs, and it’s a rock show.
In the same way, you could listen to - and I’m not trying to compare ourselves to either of these artists - but in the same way that you would listen to a Prince album or a Michael Jackson album and you hear a pop record. In the same way, when you see either of those artists live you see a live rock band play with that music. So hopefully, that was the vision for the band, to put out pop music but have the music interpreted through live instrumentation.
THE DEADBOLT: How do you feel Honor Society music blends with the films that you've contributed to at this stage in your career?
NOYES: We had the opportunity to record "Where are You Now?" for the movie Bandslam and it was an incredible opportunity. It was a really cool experience being a part of a movie and working with entertainment. We also got to shoot our first music video for that song. And, you know, the song is on Radio Disney. Recently we just released "Over You," the first single off the album. That is one that we are really psyched on right now. We are hopefully going to be shooting a music video for it very, very soon and it has been hitting radio. It was one of the cooler experiences that we’ve had.
