Honor Society learns the rock-star ropes
Posted: 09 Jul 2009 | Melody
The band Honor Society is on two tours at the same time. The quartet is joining Jordin Sparks as an opening act for the Jonas Brothers' arena tour, which comes to the Izod Center in East Rutherford on Tuesday and Wednesday. Simultaneously, it is headlining its own "Full Moon Crazy Tour," which consists of shows in the same areas the Jonas Brothers hit.
On Tuesday, for instance, the band -- which plays catchy pop-rock music and power ballads like the Jonas Brothers -- will perform in Secaucus in the afternoon, then head over to the Meadowlands. And on July 22, the day after the Jonas Brothers complete a three-night stand at the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, New York, Honor Society will headline at Manhattan's Hammerstein Ballroom.
Proving that there is no rest for an up-and-coming rock band, on Thursday -- a rare day off for the Jonas Brothers -- Honor Society will open for Mitchel Musso at Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson.
The band, which is based in Midland Park, has not released an album yet. But as proteges of the Jonas Brothers -- drummer Alexander Noyes used to be a member of the Jonases' touring band, and the group will release its album on a new label the Jonases are creating -- Honor Society has a built-in following.
The band's songs have received more than 3 million plays on its MySpace page (MySpace.com/HonorSociety). Helping to build buzz, the Jonas Brothers made a cameo appearance at Honor Society's February show at the Fillmore at Irving Plaza in New York.
The band only gets to play four songs at Jonas Brothers shows. But at its own gigs, says Noyes, "It's going to be a full set of Honor Society music. There's a lot more leeway in the set, in what songs we're going to be doing. We'll do all the songs off of our album, which comes out this fall, and a lot of cover songs."
When Noyes left the Jonas Brothers about three years ago, he didn't do it to join Honor Society. He actually left the band, which had not yet become a pop phenomenon, to attend Ramapo College of New Jersey, in Mahwah. But a year later, Honor Society members Michael Bruno (vocals, guitar), Jason Rosen (keyboards, guitar) and Andrew Lee (bass) were looking for a drummer, and a mutual friend introduced them to Noyes.
"They invited me to an audition, and I showed up, and we really clicked musically," he says. "So we decided to make Honor Society the new project."
The Jonas Brothers, music-business veterans despite their youth, have provided both professional and personal advice.
"From the performing aspect, I think the biggest piece of advice is, when you go out onstage, and there's anywhere from 15,000 to 40,000 people who are pumped to be there, listening to your music, you have to know how to pace yourself, pace your energy onstage, to give the best performance possible," says Bruno.
He adds that the brothers have helped Honor Society learn "how to reach everyone -- all the way at the top, all the way in the back -- and how to give people an experience they'll remember."

Meeting the Gentlemen of Honor Society
Posted: 08 Jul 2009 | Melody
The USA Pear family and some lucky contest winners (there’s still time for you, too - visit www.usapears.org to enter to win) got to experience the opportunity of a lifetime last week when Honor Society came to Portland to open up for the Jonas Brothers’ world tour. Soundcheck with one of the hottest bands in the country? Meet and greet with our favorite new group? Both bands and an American Idol winner live in concert? We got to enjoy all of the above.
The afternoon began with a short wait in the “VIP” line outside the Rose Garden arena in Portland. With the necessary bracelets in place, we joined a select group of screaming girls for the Jonas Brothers soundcheck “party.” The boys sang 3 songs and sounded great - and it was really cool to experience soundcheck - how often does anyone get that kind of opportunity?
Afterwards, we went backstage for our meet and greet with Honor Society. The guys were as awesome and friendly as they had been the day before - they introduced themselves to each and every one of us and posed for pictures, including this one with all of the USA Pear staff that were in attendance - welcome to the USA Pear family, guys! (Notice the USA Pear logo on the backdrop - all that was missing was the red carpet!)
Following the photo ops and Honor Society trivia came the waiting around for the show to begin. Being a VIP is not always as glamorous as it seems! But the show to come was well worth the wait. And they even played the video for “Tastes Like PEARadise” on the jumbotron as we waited - I sang along at the top of my lungs!
Honor Society played an awesome set of 4 songs and totally rocked the Rose Garden - everyone was singing and dancing along, including yours truly! The guys even gave a USA Pears shoutout to the huge crowd - watch below and meet the guys of Honor Society as they introduce themselves.
The concert continued with Jordin Sparks and the Jonas Brothers. I had a blast, and I know I wasn’t the only one. Don’t forget that you can still enter to win the same opportunity - you don’t want to miss it, it’s truly an evening to remember!
